College history

Selwyn College was founded in 1882 in memory of George Augustus Selwyn, the first Bishop of New Zealand. The fourth Master, Richard Appleton secured funding for the construction of the Dining Hall. Construction was completed in 1909, after Appleton’s death.

The panelling down the sides of the Hall was partly from wood of the Rotterdam Church, built between 1699 and 1708. The construction of Selwyn College chapel began in the spring of 1893 and was completed in 1895. The extensive and beautiful gardens at the heart of the College provide a quiet place for relaxation.
