College history

Newnham College has produced many leading women writers, scientists and intellectuals. Founded in 1871, it received a College charter in 1917 and in 1948 its women finally received University degrees. The graceful Queen Anne-style buildings are set around the extensive lawns and flower beds of the beautiful gardens. Newnham is currently one of two women’s Colleges in Cambridge, but is open to both male and female visitors during the summer.
