What is lifelong learning, and why does it matter?
Lifelong learning is a continual process of curiosity, growth, and discovery. It enriches both our professional lives and our personal perspectives, helping us stay adaptable in a world where careers and technologies evolve quickly.
Evidence shows just how powerful ongoing learning can be. Research from the Learning and Work Institute suggests that adults who take part in training are more likely to progress into work within a couple of years compared with those who do not. Similarly, the European BeLL study found that most adult learners, around 70–87% report feeling more motivated, confident and connected to others after returning to study.
These findings echo what we see every day at Cambridge. Lifelong learning is not simply about gaining new knowledge; it supports well-being, encourages new ways of thinking, and opens opportunities at every stage of life.
At the University of Cambridge Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), lifelong learning is part of our long-standing tradition. Whether you are taking your first short online course, returning to study after many years, or pursuing postgraduate study alongside work and family commitments, we offer flexible pathways designed to support your growth, wherever you are in your journey.
Cambridge as a centre for lifelong learning
At Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), learners from all walks of life have the opportunity to engage with Cambridge’s academic excellence in flexible and accessible ways.
Based at historic Madingley Hall, just outside the city of Cambridge, PACE offers a diverse range of courses, from short online courses and weekend course to undergraduate awards and postgraduate qualifications designed for adult learners. PACE also delivers the Cambridge University’s Official Summer Programme.
Many of our courses are taught part-time and online, allowing learners to balance study with their other commitments while benefitting from the same academic rigour and support that define a Cambridge education. This means life can continue alongside learning.
Every course is designed to spark intellectual curiosity and help learners progress at their own pace. This flexibility is central to our approach to lifelong learning, enabling people to study for personal enrichment, professional growth, or both.
Opportunities for Every Stage of Your Journey
We offer a wide range of courses for learners at every stage:
Short Online Courses – a flexible way to dip your toe into a new subject or develop specific skills, wherever you are in the world.
Weekend Courses – immersive, in-person experiences at Madingley Hall, ideal for learners who enjoy face-to-face discussion and community.
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses – part-time, often fully online pathways that let you gain recognised Cambridge qualifications while balancing other commitments.
Part-time Master’s and Career Accelerators – advanced part-time study options designed for professional growth and leadership.
The Cambridge Better Futures Programme and Apprenticeships – applied learning routes that connect study directly to the workplace.
The International Summer Programme – a chance to experience Cambridge study in person and connect with a global community of learners at all ages and from all backgrounds.
Enrichment and professional growth
The benefits of lifelong learning extend far beyond the classroom. For professionals, continuing education can enhance skills, open-up new career pathways, and strengthen confidence in a competitive landscape. Many learners choose to return to study to refresh their expertise, lead innovation in their field, or transition into new areas of work.
At the same time, lifelong learning is deeply rewarding on a personal level. Many learners find that studying a subject they love brings a renewed sense of purpose, creativity and connection. Engaging with new ideas, whether in philosophy, psychology, science or the arts, can transform how we think, work and interact with the world.
“My studies at Professional and Continuing Education have helped me achieve a greater sense of academic belonging (regardless of age) and opened the door to a lifelong dream,” - Catherine, undergraduate diploma of higher education in archaeology learner.
Stories of lifelong learners
Every learner’s journey is unique, but many share the same motivation: a desire to keep growing. Our community includes professionals balancing study with demanding careers, retirees rediscovering their intellectual passions, and international learners seeking to experience the University’s distinctive approach to education.
“I felt truly inspired by the young people I met on my studies; they gave me great hope for the future.” - Margaret, History of Art pathway learner
Some begin with a weekend course or short online course, and later progress to a postgraduate qualification. Others take courses simply for the joy of learning, to engage with new ideas, connect with others and stay intellectually active. Whatever the motivation, every learner becomes part of a vibrant community that values curiosity, conversation and discovery.
