Biography

Prof. Stefan Aquilina is Associate Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Malta, Co-Director of the Stanisavsky Research Centre (Leeds/Malta), and Editor-in-Chief of the Stanislavski Studies journal (Taylor and Francis). His main area of research is modern theatre, especially the work of Konstantin Stanislavsky and its impact in contemporary theatre, but has wider interests in theatre histories, actor training, reflective teaching, and academic performance. His main book publications include: Stanislavsky in the World (Bloomsbury) and The Routledge Companion to Vsevolod Meyerhold - both co-edited with Prof. Jonathan Pitches - and the monographs Modern Theatre in Russia (Bloomsbury) and Stanislavsky's Use of Improvisation (Palgrave). His forthcoming monograph, Performing Academia: Building a Successful University Career is coming oout in 2026 on Bloomsbury. 

Stefan is excited to contribute to the new Certificate in Theatre and Performance Studies as a Panel Tutor. His teaching style includes a combination of lecturing, discussion, seminars, and experiental learning. His main aim is to develop studens into independent and ceative learners. Stefan is particularly interested in the application of practical exercises in the teaching of theory and history, as well as the development of the classroom into a teaching and research space.
