For Mick, a former soldier and Cambridgeshire police officer, joining the International Summer Programme at Cambridge was more than an academic detour, it was a powerful return to learning and a long-overdue dream fulfilled.
“I left school without qualifications and went straight into the Army,” he said. “After that, I drove vans, made parts for washing machines, and eventually joined the police. It wasn’t a traditional academic journey, but over the years I kept pushing myself, learning on the job, rising through promotions, and gaining the confidence I’d once lacked.”
Mick’s interest in history led him to historical re-enactments and volunteering on archaeological digs. Over time, he found himself immersed in the world of academic inquiry. “I built friendships with archaeologists and researchers,” he said. “My wife and daughter both had degrees and Masters. I was proud of them, but I’d always felt I’d missed the experience of going to university.”
When two Norwegian friends from his archaeology team signed up for the Summer Programme, Mick decided to take the leap and join them. That was four years ago, and he hasn’t missed a summer since.
“I’ve loved every lecture,” he said. “I had a decent understanding of historical conflicts, but the courses I’ve taken have expanded that knowledge dramatically - especially the political dimensions. The instructors are exceptional, and the academic environment never feels overwhelming, no matter your background.”
Alongside the learning, Mick found something more intangible, but just as vital. “I love the feeling of being at university,” he said. “Meeting people from different cultures and walks of life has enriched the experience even more.”
Though university now may be out of reach for him, Mick is investing in the next generation. “I won’t be pursuing a degree,” he said. “Instead, I’ll use the money to help my granddaughter access the opportunity I missed out on.”
His advice to others is unequivocal. “I’d recommend this programme to anyone-whatever your background. It’s inspiring, challenging, and brilliantly delivered. I’ll be back.”
