Roman Britain: conquest and settlement

This introduction to Roman Britain begins with a look at Britain before the arrival of the Romans. We then move on to the conquest and settlement of the island, including Julius Caesar’s visit in 55 and 54 BC, and settlement under Emperor Claudius, beginning in AD 43. The settlement of the island was not straightforward, and we will examine resistance by the natives of the land, including the Boudica rebellion of AD 60. Finally, we investigate the cultural change and interaction that took place under the act of Romanisation.
