Gardens in the Renaissance were often displays of wealth and power. Skills in cultivation developed apace, and the number of recorded species grew rapidly from c200 in 1500 to over 1,500 in 1620. We explore the many aspects of these European gardens, from horticultural developments and the introduction to plants traded in from afar, to the many references to plants and gardens in Shakespeare’s plays.
