In this introduction to modern astronomy, we will take a tour, starting in our Solar System, back to a time when the Universe was a fraction of a second old. On the way, we will meet black holes, galaxies, dark matter and dark energy. We will look in more detail at the variety of landscapes in our Solar System and how, starting with hydrogen and helium, stars have created all the remaining elements that make up ourselves and our world. Finally, we will consider whether there is life and in particular intelligent life, beyond our Earth and if not, why not. This is a 10-session course and must be taken with W310Pm03 in Week 3.
