The key source to our understanding of gardens in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece is water: the long course of the Nile and the seas of the Eastern Mediterranean. Together, they sowed the seeds of mythology, beliefs and culture, and were key to food, travel and diplomacy. We place the kingdoms of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece in their contemporary world, and take into account the early 20th-century discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. The course encompasses a wide-ranging analysis of gardens and plants, from blue water lilies to plane trees, and references to intoxication in a selection of the writings of Hippocrates.
