Death is a natural part of any biological system: cells in our bodies are constantly dying and being renewed as part of the natural ebb and flow of biological processes. Some cells grow simply to be killed later on. Some cells die when they shouldn't and sometimes they won't die when they should. This course introduces you to the importance of cell death in maintaining healthy cell populations and functional organisms. It explores the biochemical and cellular basis of the most common cell death processes (apoptosis and necrosis), and explains some of the less well-known methods of cell death, exploring what happens when these processes go wrong. You should be confident in your understanding of basic biology and biological terminology.
