1776: Revolution, civil war and global conflict

Was the quarrel between Britain and its American colonies really about issues of taxation and representation or was there more to it? This was a conflict fought not just on Lexington Green or the New York hinterland, but in Ireland, in Gibraltar and in India. For Britain this was the next stage in a conflict over power and rights that went back to the days of the Stuarts and a new episode in its long battle for global supremacy with its deadly rivals, France and Spain. This course takes a very different look at a very familiar story.
